Prostitution is Good for Nevada.
Banning Legal Brothels Puts Visitors at Risk
By Wayne Bride, CEO
Prostitution is available in Las Vegas, it’s just not legal, and that’s
the plain truth. Every local knows this fact, but our visitors are left with a
very different impression. Legal brothels should be available to those that
seek them. It should be regulated, taxed and be open to the regular market
forces like any other business in order to
protect our visitors.
Being the only state that tolerates legalized prostitution, Nevada is in a
unique position. Over the past 10 years the state has not only enjoyed a growth
in residence and business, we have continually grown our tourist numbers to over
an
impressive 41,000 million visitors per year. I daresay that these visitors and
residents are aware that prostitution is legal in parts of Nevada and that is
why many of them utilize the services of the working girl in legal settings.
The remaining 49 states have outlawed one of the oldest professions in the world
only to create illegal prostitution on their streets. In a legal setting, health
codes are stringent and help to create the safe settings that are provided to
the numerous visitors that wish to partake of the offerings. Every day in Las
Vegas, taxicabs and limos make trips to our nearby neighbors in Pahrump to visit
a brothel and probably the same happens at our neighbor to the north, Washoe
County. Our state’s economy, not only in the rural areas, but the state as a
whole, benefits greatly from this industry.
I have visited several of the member brothels and met with the managers and
working girls on several occasion to offer our members benefits to them. I have
yet to meet one working girl that isn’t there by choice and doesn’t have a love
what she
has chosen as a profession. These girls are beautiful and intelligent, and often
have a second profession or business in the more mainstream areas of business
and industry.
There are those who question whether we should continue to offer legal
prostitution because they believe Fortune 500 companies would not relocate to
Las Vegas if we are the only state offering this service. They think families
won’t move here because we continue to be who we are. Well, to those of you, I
say, hasn’t the past 10 years of unprecedented growth in Nevada given you a
CLUE?
Nevada has always been unique in that it doesn’t think like the rest of the
country. We believe in fairness, freedom and personal rights. We like to make
our tourists happy, provide them with the services they are looking for, and if
legal prostitution is one of those services, then let us embrace this industry
and reap the benefits. Let Nevada stay unique and on the pinnacle of personal
freedom.
It is not a question of whether we NEED legalized prostitution, but rather if by
eliminating the legal brothels do we not contribute to the crime and unsafe sex
practices that result in streetwalking and the like. Go down to Metro and get
the numbers on vice in Las Vegas. Look at the number of prostitution arrests,
the cost to taxpayers to try and put some restraints on the illegal trade and
then measure the costs against the legal areas of the state.
I recently read an article in the Las Vegas Sun questioning the usefulness of
prostitution and whether we, as a state, should continue to allow it. The writer
questioned whether a Fortune 500 company would move to a state with legalized
sex for sale, by license. He questioned whether a board of directors would be
offended and how their spouses would react.
I say we should continue to embrace this state that has grown in tourism and
relocation faster than any other state in the nation in spite of also
maintaining legalized prostitution. Let’s enjoy who we are and quit ignoring the
reality that legalized prostitution contributes greatly to the fabric of our
society.
We choose to offer these services because it is a fundamental desire of human
nature and one that should be embraced for its record of public safety and
benevolence.
