It’s May 1st 2005, and as I stand here at the famous Neon Sign welcoming me to Las Vegas, I am reminded of Betty Whitehead Willis, born in 1924 in Las Vegas the creator of this signage, who claimed no patent or copyrights or any ownership on this magnificent design. I am humbled and honored to be made an honorary member of the Sin City Chamber of Commerce, Las Vegas. For me, to be part of those who have made a difference and those who are now contributing to the growth of Las Vegas in various ways is going to be truly an exciting experience. This visit has been one celebration after another, Las Vegas was celebrating the National Physical Fitness & sports month, Better Sleeping month, National High Blood Pressure month, Older Americans month, Mother’s day. Everyone was celebrating; I was in the city ready for the biggest party in 100 yrs. I was in a place where a loser today might be a winner tomorrow. From hoping to win at the slot machines to playing Black Jack at the Wynn to betting with Dale on his favorite horse in the Kentucky derby, for me the best was yet to come! Las Vegas is Celebrating the Centennial! This is my first visit to Las Vegas and moments after landing on its soil, I have been having one stimulating experience after another! From community to the strip, from Chicken Ranch to the Community Counseling Center, from a meditation program at Renee’s Life’s Simply Divine in Henderson to Jada Fire’s Studio-Open in Las Vegas, from a chance meeting with the owner Mr.Venkat at the First Friday after party at the Aruba Hotel & Spa, organized by Bryan Hawley of Spaced Invaders, to being a guest of honor at the Meet & Greet sponsored by the SC Chamber of Commerce, from meeting great performers like Phoenix Blaze, singer Terry Prince, author Renee Reindeau, to healers, trainers and personal growth teachers like Sheila Z, Sylvia Brallier, Lisa Brooks, Ted, Tim Sands, ….. from personal interaction with creative designer Judith Cameron to the creative and path breaking educationist Sheri and Jerry Kaminski co- founders of USA’s top ten schools- the Imprints Day School, from visit to the Art District on Charleston to Wynn’s Resort on Las Vegas Dr., from witnessing the eye gratifying multimedia Art projections by VJ Pablo to the mind boggling acts of master magician Jeff McBride….. I have met these men and women who have come from all over the world and from different ethnic background to this fabulous Sin City. I found Las Vegas to be a place with growing new consciousness that accepts, allows, and encourages individual freedom of choice. A city of hope and possibility, and for those who dare to take the chance to create and participate in the biggest, the brightest, the tallest and the best, the rewards are surprising. I found Las Vegas to be the most exciting city in the world, allowing me to easily mingle and meet people from all walks of life. At the end of my 2 week journey in Las Vegas, the city of lights, I have fallen in love with Las Vegas, the melting pot, where dreams manifest in real time. I experienced that it’s the billionaires, artists, and ordinary people with dreams that makes Las Vegas, what it is! Inspite of its diversity and an interesting mix of consciousness, and people with smiling eyes, I found most of them as seekers. Seekers of Instant Nirvana may be that is why Las Vegas is also known as SIN City. Yes, we all are seekers, constantly struggling to arrive somewhere. But, where? Everyone seems to be in pursuit of something; not realizing that at the core of all our varied pursuits is the desire to be free from pursuits itself! Our Mind’s nature being impermanent It tends to constantly SEEK, something to ‘anchor’ But, the anchor we choose is itself transitory So, the mind keeps moving from ‘anchor’ to ‘anchor’ Until it comes to rest When it finds … A permanent ‘anchor’- the SELF!!
May be there are as many reasons to love this city as the number of twinkling lights on the strips. I love Las Vegas for it is going to be the birth place of “Center for Sustainable Happiness”.
